Why this is a
Masterpiece

This drawing is a combination of six pieces of paper. In the middle, the owner is sitting on a long and narrow bed. He wears a crown and a robe and holds a fan. Next to him stands a lady in waiting. On the right side are some kitchen-appliances and a maid is busy with her chores. There is a bird on the tree on the left side, under which a horse is standing. At the upper right corner are farmland, trees and tools. At the upper left corner, a toad’s head and stars are painted which symbolize the moon. Its artistic style is almost consistent with tomb murals at Jiayuguan in the Wei-Jin Dynasty. This is the earliest well-preserved painting on paper unearthed in China, so it is very precious.

History of the Object
The tombs are located to the Southeast of Turpan city close to the ancient City of Gaochang. The tombs were the public cemetery of the ancient Gaochang residents. Among the more than ten thousand cultural relics excavated are over 2700 books, paintings, pottery, silk and cotton textiles. The time recorded in the books ranges from 273 to 772.
