Why this is a
Masterpiece

The stele is of historic importance because it sheds new light on the history of the population of Laos and the introduction of Buddhism.

History of the Object
The inscribed stele was discovered in 1968 in the Thalat Region, 100 km. north of Vientiane. The text is in archaic Mon, the language of ancient Burma. It was an important discovery and puts the history of the Thalat vestiges back to the 6th Century. Pieces from that time have been found in the South of Thailand and in Cambodia, but never that far North. The text on the stele provides information about offerings to a Buddhist monastery.
