This work is one of the more famous prints by Hiroshige from the first series of prints on the Tokaido that helped to secure his name as a landscape print master to rival Hokusai.

History of the Object
This is one of fifty-five prints made as part of Hiroshiges first series of prints on the Tokaido Way.

Acquisition
The print was donated to the museum along with a large collection of Japanese material in 1923 from the Hon. Walter Samuel. An extension was built, funded by his father Lord Bearsted the founder of Shell petroleum, to partly house a dedicated Japanese Gallery. The new gallery was opened by Baron Hayashi the Japanese Amabassador.
