Why this is a
Masterpiece

Created during Wang Yuanqi’s seventieth year, this painting named “Emerald-green South Mountain” came into being in 1711. As one of the Six Masters of Early Qing Dynasty, he excelled at traditional techniques, with his high level of artistic skill maturing and perfecting during his later years. The structure of this painting is ingenious, with sharp yet harmonious contrasts, and incorporates what is known as strokes “so dense no needle can pass through, so sparse that a ship may sail through”. Just as it is written in Wu Hufan’s comments on this painting, it embodies three perfects: perfect expression, perfect color and perfect technique. This is indeed one of the best works of this seasoned painter.

History of the Object
Tan Zekai wrote “Long Painting of Emerald-green Southern Mountain, by Lutai” on this painting (Lutai is one of the titles of the artist). The artist himself put down: “Green gathers on South Mountain. I draw this to give good wishes to Ganweng’s 60th birthday in advance. Wang Yuanqi.” A square seal in Bai font, one in Zhu font and a rectangular seal in Zhu font reads respectively ”Wang Yuanqi Yin” (Seal of Wang Yuanqi), “Lu Tai” and “Hua Tu Liu Yu Ren Kan”(I leave this painting for others to enjoy). In the front and back there are the signatures of Wu Hufan, Wu Huayuan, Ye Gongchuo and such famous men, along with more than ten seals of collectors such as Li Xiangyun, Wu Hufan, Liu Haisu, Ye Gongchuo and Ding Huikang. This work of art was once collected by Li Jiyun, a member of the Manchu Plain White Banner Corps belonging to Han Chinese clan in the Qing Dynasty, later collected by Mr. Wu Hufan, then transferred to the Shanghai collector, Ding Huikang.
