Fanglei Vase
M.C. 2000-9

Why this is a
Masterpiece

This vase is characteristic of the Fanglei of the Anyang period. The third handle is decorated with a bovine head. A ram head appears on the principal side of the vase. The rest of the surface is carefully covered by ornamentation in a very low relief: taotie, cigale wings, angular spirals. The low relief suggests to date the piece from the 12th century B.C.

History of the Object
Before being given to the museum, the vase was in a western private collection.
