Why this is a
Masterpiece

A noteworthy example of cloisonné, produced under Emperor Qianlong (1735-1796) and influenced by the European techniques which were imported by Jesuit missionaries. It is evidence of the “baroque” taste of the Qianlong period, whose formal decoration patterns were influenced by pre-Han archaic bronzes. By Imperial will, workshops originated within the Forbidden Town at the time of Emperor Kangxi. Industrial factories went into operational mode, producing luxury goods of extremely high quality, designed for the Court. The introduction of “foreign” elements was particularly appreciated by Emperor Qianlong who was fond of exotic decoration and techniques.

History of the Object
Camillo Candiani, commander of the Italian Navy Division in the Far East, probably obtained this tripod from the Imperial Palace of Peking, during the sack of Euro-Japanese troupes. First presented to the King of Italy by the Rear Admiral on his return from China in 1902, the tripod was donated to Museo Nazionale Preistorico Etnografico Luigi Pigorini by the Italian Ministry of Navy in 1907.
