Headdress of the Bison Horn Maria
SAs 11826

Why this is a
Masterpiece

The picturesque headdress is made in this way only by the Bison Horn Maria tribe, who make – according to Verrier Elwin, one of the most important researchers of Adivasi of the last century – the most splendid of all horn-headdresses. Nowadays they use not only natural materials such as polished horn from bison or bull but also artificial ones made out of metal.

History of the Object
Egon Freiherr von Eickstedt acquired the headdress for the museum in 1928/29 along with another similar one. The second headdress had a blue instead of a red cloth, but it got lost during the second world war, most probably in the fire that struck the museum in 1943.
