Why this is a
Masterpiece

According to the best netsukeshi tradition, the artist drew inspiration from the raw material, masterly exploiting the horn's natural shape. He reproduced two toads on the horn fork - one on a seed, the other on an old lotus leaf. The roughness of the skin on the animal's back is conveyed by the horn’ spongy inside, surfaced through carving. Patina, furthermore, lends the object a real life taste and a sense of deep penetration of nature. The unknown artist who created it has been able to recall fully the spirit that moves those small masterpieces.

History of the Object
Netsuke, with ojime and inro, originally made up a set exploited for practical purposes. Later on, it turned into work of art, status symbol and a collector's item, mainly for those Westerners who are interested in Japanese history, traditions, and creativity, that it remarkably represents.
