Why this is a
Masterpiece

These drums are magnificent. They have beautiful patterns and this one is very big, which is unique.

History of the Object
The Dong drums were extensively traded throughout Southeast Asia, sparking production of local versions and a repertoire of motifs, which are still found in the arts and crafts of today. The motifs depicted on the drums also reveal much about ancient rituals and lifestyle. The designs represent fertility and prosperity. There is a sun-motif in the centre of the lid, surrounded by concentric circles of fish, flowers and birds. One theory suggests that the frogs and edges of the drums represent the wet season and that more frogs represented on the top meant more rain in that year. These types of drums are still used by some ethnic groups today.
