Why this is a
Masterpiece

Damian Domingo’s attention to detail in this work anticipates his dexterity in handling miniature paintings. The delicate veil over the Virgin’s head and shoulders is transparent to the point of appearing almost invisible. Drapery folds and curves of the figures’ clothing appear quite realistic. Damian Domingo uses color and drama with restraint. The painting depicts three generations of the Holy Family. The infant Jesus and His parents are at the center, his grandparents on either side, and God the Father, the Holy Spirit, and the angels high above. At the center, Saint Joseph tenderly holds Jesus. Combining celestial and earthly roots is a popular practice in Philippine religious genre. There are only a few surviving works by Damian Domingo, one of the earliest recognized masters in Philippine art. They consist of small jewel-like religious paintings largely rendered in the miniaturist style: portrait miniatures painted on ivory, and watercolor albums of tipos del pais depicting the costumes and inhabitants of the Philippines.

History of the Object
The largest among the three works in the Ongpin family collection, direct descendants of the artist. This particular painting marks the peak of his finely detailed miniaturist style, especially in comparison to his Catedra de San Pedro en Roma and Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Interesting details are the two misspelled words in the painting’s caption. Instead of “Sagrada” and “Anna”, the inscription reads “Sagrda” and “Aana”. This gives us an insight on the rudimentary education that the artist must have received.
