Why this is a
Masterpiece

It is a masterpiece because this is one of the secret maps, made by the Dutch to find the Spice Islands. The islands were kept secret for commercial reasons, so historically this is an interesting map.

History of the Object
It is a map of the Moluccae at the 17th century by W.J. Blaeu (1597-1638). The Moluccae produced cloves which were very much sought after by European countries. This is one of the oldest maps of the Moluccas in the museum Nasional. It is a page, not an atlas. The map was brought from Holland to Indonesia, possibly in 1604, to help with finding spices. The Colonial Government donated the map to the museum for its collection.
