Why this is a
Masterpiece

This piece is a fine example of a foreign design adapted by the local culture using readily available materials.

History of the Object
Such armors and their accompanying helmets from the southern Philippines gained great value as emblems of the datu or political/military leader. This crossover of the arts of state is also found elsewhere in Southeast Asia and may be traced back to as early as the 15th and 16th centuries. The coat of mail was featured in Treasures at Ayala Museum (2002).
