Why this is a
Masterpiece

This charming little ivory carving with its naive folk touch, fine workmanship and excellent execution is a small masterpiece.

History of the Object
This is a characteristic iconographic form of Buddha image in Laos and in northern Thailand. The legs of the standing figure are slightly apart, his arms extend directly downwards, slightly away from the body with the fingers pointing to the ground. The curving line of the arms, hands and fingers is echoed by the upcurving bottom edge of the robe. Worshippers invoke him for rain to nourish the rice fields.
